The 1 Reason Australian Citizens Are Against Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Moving There - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle haven’t been in the spotlight much over the past month as the couple took a break from royal duties and spent Thanksgiving and Christmas in the U.S. and Canada. A break from royal life is something that many assume they really needed after their emotional documentary in which Markle admitted that she is struggling a bit with adjusting to royal life and the media attention that comes with it.

But prior to their break across the pond, there have been rumors that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex want out of the U.K. and would like to make their base in another country. Several reports claim that South Africa, America, or Australia are at the top of their list as a possible place to make their home, however, Australians citizens aren’t welcoming that idea.

Here’s the reason why people from down under are against the prince and former actress living there.

Why Aussies don’t want Prince Harry and Markle to move there

If Prince Harry and his wife really want to change their address Australia might not be the best place for them to go.

According to a poll conducted by Nine.com.au, less than 10% percent of the more than 700 participants surveyed are in favor of the idea.

Those who would welcome the royal couple down under say that having them there could really benefit the economy and tourism. However, one in five participants are against it because they fear that the cost of having them there would fall directly on the Australian taxpayers.

But even with the Aussies who would like to see Markle and Harry relocate to the country, only 3% of those surveyed are for having them there permanently. Most would rather it be for 10 years or less.

Not feeling the love in Canada either?

As mentioned above, the duke and duchess spent the holidays in Los Angeles and Canada. During their Canadian retreat, they were spotted on Vancouver Island hiking in Horth Hill Regional Park and jogging in neighboring North Saanich. But they were rejected when they tried making a reservation at a swanky eatery.

A restaurant called Deep Cove Chalet in North Saanich would not take their reservation because of the pair’s extensive security requests.

Bev Koffel, who is the co-owner of the seafood eatery, said that although she could not accommodate Harry and Markle’s security needs without disrupting the service of other diners she hopes they’ll call again and wished them well.

“Let them have their peace and quiet. For us to be so lucky to have them in the area, how lucky is that? I wish them all the privacy they can possibly get,” Koffel said, adding, “I hope everything goes fine for them. They’re breaking away from tradition and I just wish them all the best.”
