Want to get a jump on next month’s Oscar nominations? You can already begin culling the list of contenders now that the academy has released shortlists for nine categories, including the races for best documentary, international film and original song. Below, your Carpetbagger has analyzed six of those narrowed races. (The three other categories, all for short films, contain entries that have not yet been widely screened.)

Bong Joon Ho’s hit “Parasite” continues its strong award-season run with an inclusion on the list of contenders for the international-film Oscar. Though “Parasite” is almost certain to eventually triumph in this race, it’s still a strong lineup that includes Pedro Almodóvar’s “Pain and Glory” — another foreign-language film angling for multiple Oscar nominations — as well as the two films that were runners-up to “Parasite” in the contest for the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, “Atlantics” and “Les Misérables.” Among the notable foreign films missing from this category are Brazil’s “Invisible Life,” Colombia’s “Monos” and the acclaimed “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” which became ineligible when France selected “Les Misérables” as its official submission instead.

This group has already been cut in half from a list of 20 contenders the academy released earlier this month, which means it’s the end of the line for the box office hits “Aladdin” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home” as well as the critics’ favorites “Ad Astra” and “Ford v Ferrari.” But hey, “Cats” is in there! The eventual prize in this category most often goes to a movie with strong Oscar heat across the board, meaning the academy is less inclined to reward the pyrotechnics of “Avengers: Endgame” and should instead favor the de-aging of “The Irishman” or the wartime verisimilitude of “1917.”

“Parasite” was widely expected to make the international-film shortlist, but few expected an end-credits song co-written by Bong Joon Ho to show up on the list of culled original-song contenders — and over Taylor Swift’s new original song for “Cats,” no less! Swift’s snub will deprive Oscar watchers of watching her go head to head with Beyoncé (“The Lion King”), though it sets up an interesting scenario where Elton John may compete against himself for songs added to two different films: “Never Too Late” from “The Lion King,” and “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” a duet with Taron Egerton from the John biopic “Rocketman.”

Here’s a race where the Oscars are keeping it in the family: Two of the strongest contenders on the shortlist, Thomas Newman for “1917” and Randy Newman for “Marriage Story,” happen to be cousins. Neither has ever won in this category, though Pixar regular Randy Newman has two other Oscars, for writing original songs for “Monsters, Inc.” and “Toy Story 3.”
