Jumanji: The Next Level unseats Frozen II at the box office
After spending three straight weekends freezing out the competition and dominating the #1 spot, Frozen II has officially been unseated by Sony Pictures’ Jumanji: The Next Level. The highly-anticipated sequel opened with a domestic total of $60.1 million over the weekend for a worldwide cume of $213 million worldwide. To compare, the movie’s predecessor, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, debuted with a domestic total of $36.2 over its opening weekend in 2017.
Walt Disney Studios’ animated sequel Frozen II fell to the #2 spot with a domestic haul of $19.2 million over the weekend, totaling $366.5 domestically and officially topping $1 billion globally. According to Deadline, the movie is the sixth Disney title to take in over a billion at the worldwide box office this year. Frozen II will also likely surpass the original 2013 film’s $1.27 billion worldwide cume.
Lionsgate’s Knives Out shifted to #3 at the box office after taking in $9.3 million over the weekend for a domestic haul of $78.9 million and a worldwide cume of $162.2 million. Richard Jewell brought in $5 million total over its opening weekend, marking Clint Eastwood’s second-worst domestic opening in the director’s career, according to The Hollywood Reporter, as the movie moved into the #4 spot.
Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s Black Christmas claimed the #5 slot over the weekend, opening domestically at a low $4.4 million for a worldwide haul of $7.5 million. The horror remake was initially tracking to open around $10 million, falling short of box office expectations (via Deadline).
